D^2EPC, E-DYCE & ePANACEA Joint Final Conference

Three EU-funded Horizon 2020 projects, D^2EPC, E-DYCE & ePANACEA , joined forces in organizing a final conference to present their outcomes, as all of them are reaching their end after 3 years of hard work. The event was held physically on the 24th of May 2023 at Hotel Le Plaza in Brussels. The conference focused on “Next Generation Energy Performance Assessment, Rating and Certification: Towards a Smart and Decarbonised Future for European Buildings” where each project presented its own findings on how to optimize and extend the use of Energy Performance Certificates.

The conference contributed to the dialogue ahead of EPCs interlinked with AI, platforms, data and the BIM-based digital twin concept and provided participants the opportunity to discuss about:

  • The global context, EU policy context, EPBD Recast, REPower EU etc. regarding EPCs
  • The gaps of the existing energy performance certification schemes
  • The technology, policy and market insights from the three projects
  • Specific results from the three projects
  • The opportunities and challenges of dynamic and smart EPCs

The three projects’ specific objectives have been:

Set the grounds for the NextGen of dynamic EPCs for the operational assessment of buildings energy performance, building upon actual data and the ‘digital twin’ concept to enable enhanced multi-parameter assessment and provide improved AI-driven assessment recommendations (D^2EPC project)

The natural evolution of the conventional EPC into real time optimisation of building performance and comfort, by capturing the building’s dynamic behavior, and simultaneously providing transparent feedback, through an intuitive interface (E-DYCE project)

Making use of the most advanced techniques in dynamic and automated simulation modelling, big data analysis and machine learning, inverse modelling or the estimation of potential energy savings and economic viability check (ePANACEA project)

In 2020, D^2EPC, E-DYCE and ePANACEA became part of the Next Gen EPCs cluster which also includes 10 more related projects: X-tendo, U-CERT, QualDeEPC, EPC-RECAST, crossCert, EUBSuperHub, iBRoad2EPC, TIMEPAC, SmartlivingEPC and CHRONICLE.

The conference included summary presentations of outcomes by the 3 projects’ partners, as well as insightful contributions and roundtable discussions with EU experts.

Data collection and processing for Dynamic Energy Performance Certification

Webinar_Data collection and processing for dynamic EPC

Dynamic energy performance evaluation of buildings in operation requires gathering data from a multitude of controllers and sensors. This data collection is enabled by recent advances in Internet of Things (IoT) as well as Building Management Systems (BMS) communication interfaces, combined with exploitation of open data.

Once the data is collected, it is further processed in cloud environments to carry out monitoring analyses that will deliver further value to the building operator and occupants. This processing builds upon modern cloud and data processing technologies, whose recent advances have opened new avenues within building energy and indoor climate management.

Experiences from the E-DYCE demonstration project will be presented in this webinar combining perspectives from industrial actors with full-scale solutions as well as building analysis experts.”

Short Abstract: “Sensor monitoring data for energy consumption from all demonstration cases and weather data from outer sources is collected for deep learning models development. CORE’s Hybrid infrastructure gives the power for real time inferencing of the models with ability to accurately forecast short, medium and long term weather and energy consumption values of the buildings. The global availability of those forecasts and the wide connectivity options with other platforms are unprecedented due to Cloud technology”.

Master’s degree thesis & E-DYCE

On the 24th of October 2022, Eng. Manuela Vigliotti successfully discussed her master’s degree thesis in telecommunication engineering (ICT for Smart Society) reaching the maximum evaluation with laude.

Title:Control approaches for ventilative cooling and indoor air quality systems in a school demo-building in Torre Pellice”.

Introduction: “This thesis is part of the European project E-DYCE, and it aims at implementing a control solution to remotely manage three different detached mechanical ventilation units installed in an E-DYCE school demo building in Torre Pellice. The main objective is to control indoor air quality and ventilation for cooling by comparing different control strategies (6 in total) that run in parallel over three units to find the optimal one, considering both environmental parameters and energy consumption. Control approaches for ventilative cooling are monitored by testing them in the school using SOAP to retrieve current conditions of rooms from Capetti sensors and Modbus to send control signals to mechanical ventilation units. Indoor air quality control strategies are simulated with the Energy Management System of EnergyPlus using calibrated models of actual rooms to obtain significant results.”

E-DYCE 6th Plenary and Steering Committee Meeting (PSC) in Nicosia, Cyprus, on September 19th to 21st, 2022

In the beginning of the 3rd and final year of the E-DYCE project, the consortium organized its 6th PCS Meeting in Nicosia, Cyprus. The meeting took place in the Multipurpose Municipal Center of Nicosia, courtesy of the Municipality of Nicosia, and was organized by partner ESTIA.

All partners of the consortium met in person for three (3) days to evaluate the progress of the project, by presenting and discussing all the effort and updated achievements in all ongoing Work Packages. Moreover, a very fruitful and in-depth assessment on the future work planning and the upcoming activities during project’s critical final year, took place.

We were pleased that 4 members of project’s Advisory Board joined the meeting providing their valuable thoughts and recommendations. Ms. Tine Steen Larsen, Mr. Nikos Hadjinicolaou and Mr. Savvas Valchos participated in person, whilst Mr. Claude-Alain Roulet participated on-line.

Initially, our coordinator Prof. Michal Pomianowski from AAU presented the status of the project, together with the co-coordinator Asst. Prof. Giacomo Chiesa from POLITO.

Afterwards, the WP & Task leaders presented the ongoing work, as well as the description of next semester planned actions. The consortium assessed the results achieved so far, and the partners exchanged ideas on how to address the major challenges of the project.

A brief description of the work and the upcoming activity for each WP is following below.

During the second day an important workshop took place were the value proposition of 4 different personas (authorities, public administrators, building owners and EPC experts, was identified.

Finally, E-DYCE project in collaboration with the Nicosia Municipality, organized two (2) guided tours to discover bioclimatic architectural strategies applied to buildings to reduce energy consumption, and to urban space to mitigate the “heat island” phenomenon. The tours were also open to the public.
